Autodesk uses egg timer approach to releasing software

I am no software developer but programming is done when it's done right? Not when the egg timer goes off.
Could you imagine trying to run a business and setting a 'drop dead date' where your product went out the door whether it was usable or not and then actually followed through with shipping a non usable product?? You'd be out of business or you would change the release date.
I have said it 100 times and I will continue to repeat myself. Autodesk is simply not capable of meeting their own predetermined 12 month subscription / release schedule with either a) stable software or b) something worth upgrading for.
12 months is just not enough time and they have proven it themselves.
Further more the 12 month release schedule is designed 101% for share holders (4 quarters right) and not in the best interest of their revenue generating ‘customers’.
CAD managers definitely do NOT want to have to implement new CAD software every 12 months. A 24 month cycle would be MUCH better. This is precisely how ‘AutoCAD’ has ended up with customers spread across 5 different releases. Autodesk simply cannot keep up to their own 12 month cycle.
So people tell me, 'Well Daryl don't install your subscription paid software then. Just shelf it and it's still cheaper than having to pay extra for out of date upgrades when it finally is ready".
And my answer is always the same 'Yes of course and that's because they set the prices dummy'.
I have made a decent living using, selling and teaching Autodesk products for which I am very thankful but sometimes I just don't understand them.

You forgot to include a file format change every 3 years.

It's also going to be interesting because of Autodesk's new pricing format that starts next March where to upgrade, it's 50% off the retail price if you're not on subscription.

I can't argue with you at all to your points, but at least everyone will be on subscription and at least have the latest version.

Personally, I'm hoping that stops some of the verion issues.

Thanks for the heads up Greg. I have no doubt the resellers are getting beat up pretty bad these days over REVIT too. Which is unfortunate because the resellers have no more say in this than the users do (probably less) and still end up being the autodesk punching bag...... which is exactly why I limped away with my sanity. Too many black eyes my friend ;)

It's true, but personally, I turned the tables on the old school thinking. Our company has become more consultative and solution selling geared around BIM, IPD and LEED.

Unfortunately for the laggards, they have much more to lose than we do. Now that HR 2454 passed and is being worked on in the Senate, it's only a matter of time before 30% energy efficiency is going to be required in ALL residential and commercial products. We all know that polylines and 2D drafting don't stand a chance in the new CAD world. That's Coordination, Analysis and Design.

If we can make it through the recession, there's going to be a line 20 miles long of people begging for Revit training.

The "we only do 2D not 3D" mantra is soon to be a phrase of the past. With everything you're doing and what we're doing, it's all positive. I'm a technology snob and believe with all my heart that BIM is better, so I've learned to ignore the punches.

Greg I like the cut of your jib.

How refreshing, a reseller with a plan and vision and not just pushing boxes. Actually you don't even get a box anymore ... pushing auth-codes is more like it.

I suggest anyone getting on board with BIM (building information modeling) should check out > http://www.caddcenters.com/

I was completely unaware of the US bill 'HR 2454' so I googled it and this is what I found > http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-2454

Very interesting in deed. This is worth a blog post all on it's own.

Thanks for that great information !
